Rotating Sandwiches – That's It
173 points by benwikler 2 years ago | 96 comments- mauvehaus 2 years agoI'm not sure if this is going to forestall or foment heated discussion about what is or isn't a sandwich, but it's certainly an attempt to codify what constitutes sandwichness:
- j-kent 2 years agoThere’s no such thing as a sandwich (phylogenetically)
- tantalor 2 years agoThere's no such thing as phylogeny (sandwichly)
- handsclean 2 years agoSure there is, you just need to look at the evolution of language, not DNA. The common ancestor is a meal eaten by the Earl of Sandwich in the 1760s, “salt beef between two slices of toasted bread”.
- tantalor 2 years ago
- foobarian 2 years agoWe would be remiss not to bring up the sandwich alignment chart:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AlignmentCharts/comments/83l9jy/san...
- bell-cot 2 years agoYet even their "Anarchist" (lower right) square has a rectangular item of food, with a starchy, finger-friendly exterior around a less starchy & finger-friendly interior.
Vs. a chart with chocolate-covered cherries, ceiling tiles, and such...
- entropicdrifter 2 years agoAgreed. One point of contention I've seen before is the question of whether a piece of fried chicken with breading is a sandwich. Personally I argue that it is not, because the batter is cooked for the first time on the chicken itself. The starchy finger-friendly exterior should be fully edible before the construction of a sandwich.
You could argue, however, that a piece of fried chicken with breading is technically a meat bun.
- entropicdrifter 2 years ago
- capableweb 2 years agoIt is brought up on the "Cube Rule" page, but the page contains way more detail than so. If you haven't gone through it before, I recommend you do so.

- cool_dude85 2 years agoI subscribe to the fringe "four foods theory":
1) Substance - Indivisible, elemental food. Example: Vanilla ice cream, no toppings
2) Pizza - Monobreadular, arranged. Example: Nigiri sushi
3) Sandwich - Multibreadular, arranged. Example: Big Mac
4) Salad - Separable, not arranged. Example: Salad with croutons
- JohnFen 2 years agoWhat is lasagna? It doesn't seem to easily fit in any of those categories, although it's clearly not a "substance".
- cool_dude85 2 years agoSandwich, as it is multibreadular and arranged.

- sonicrocketman 2 years agoSandwiches are but one part of the equation! For full context see the taxonomic definition of Sandwich (domain Catino, kingdom Cincta).

(disclaimer, I wrote this spec)
- Keegs 2 years agoI’m a big fan of the cube rule except for its salad category. The idea that a frittata and a bowl of tomato soup are equivalent is hard to swallow (pun intended).
- dylan604 2 years agowhen has any comment posted publicly to the internet forestalled heated discussion?
- boringg 2 years agohot dogs and burritos are sandwiches right?
- gen220 2 years agoAll according to cube rule:
Hot dogs are categorically tacos.
Burritos typically begin life as a "calzone", but experience most of their brief lives through the lens of a "soup/salad in a bread bowl".
Sometimes people prefer to fold a burrito into the "sushi" pattern. Depends on your mental image of a burrito.
- melenaboija 2 years agoHumanity and its culture can't get stuck because of these outdated and despotic rules. It has been a while since I feel hot dogs started transitioning into quiche.

- melenaboija 2 years ago
- kzrdude 2 years agoA burrito is a calzone in the cube rule system, but I'd rather rename that class to burrito.
- entropicdrifter 2 years agoAgreed. Though oddly that does qualify a corn dog as a burrito on a stick

- carlosjobim 2 years agoFun fact: Some of the sandwiches seem to be rotating in the opposite direction. This is due to an optical illusion called the "Silhouette Illusion" [0], first discovered in 2003. If you focus hard on a sandwich and blur your eyes slightly, you can make it change which direction it rotates.
- doctoboggan 2 years agoI am assuming you are joking but I see other people responding as if you aren't.
This isn't true as the spinning dancer illusion only works on silhouettes and not full color images.
- oceanplexian 2 years agoI squinted at the sandwiches trying to reverse their direction like an idiot. Guessing I’m not the only one.
- JKCalhoun 2 years agoThe dancer illusion is as though you are observing the dancer from a long distance away through a telescope of some sort where things like her hands do not appear to vary in relative size as she turns and they become nearer/farther from us.
- StrictDabbler 2 years agoIt also works on translucent objects and in a different form on the mask illusion, where a rotation depends on whether you believe the mask is bent away from or toward you.
Basically anytime that depth information is obscured.
- oceanplexian 2 years ago
- jon889 2 years agoI can't see how this is correct. The spinning dancer works because there's no details on it.
- evan_ 2 years agoI was skeptical as well but after looking into it further I can confirm that it's actually true. The brain is amazing!
- ydant 2 years agoI still don't buy it - looking at these two in isolation:
https://rotatingsandwiches.files.wordpress.com/2023/02/banh-...
https://rotatingsandwiches.files.wordpress.com/2023/02/shrim...
Very "clearly" spinning in opposite directions.
- wunderlust 2 years agoThe ambiguous effect of the silhouette dancer is real, but some of the sandwiches really are rotating in a different direction from the others.

- samstave 2 years agoThey need a BLINK tag version so as it rotates, it also blinks - or throws confetti or sparks.

- geepytee 2 years agoImagine opening Uber Eats and looking for a restaurant to order from. You are scrolling and they all look the same, but suddenly... What is that? That can't be right, this one has spinning pics of all the food they serve? HECK YEAH I'm ordering from that one
- floatinglotus 2 years agoWhy are VCs not backing more projects like this?
- Buttons840 2 years agoThat's a company blog I would actually follow. I want to read a 4 page post about series-c funding to capture even more rotating sandwiches. I want to read about their hiring practices and how they use scrum to organize their sandwich projects.

- braingenious 2 years agoTo lay this to rest:
Should a tear occur such that the bread around a hot dog separates into two discrete pieces, it is then a sandwich. Therefore a hot dog is a potential sandwich in the same way that an egg is a potential chicken.
- bell-cot 2 years agoAlmost like the old Hamster Dance ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hampster_Dance ) has been reincarnated...
- boringg 2 years agoAmazing - why aren't there any burritos in the rotating sandwich list?
Also you should create a bunch of rotating sandwich NFTs - if you went back two years you could a millionaire off those NFT sales.
- WesolyKubeczek 2 years agoThe spirit of zombo.com is alive!
- lagrange77 2 years agoSandwiches 10 and 25 rotate in the wrong direction, please fix ASAP!!
- afandian 2 years agoThey might be from countries south of the equator? That would explain them spinning the other way.
- ElfinTrousers 2 years agoThat's a feature, those sandwiches are made of antimatter.

- a_shovel 2 years agoTwo word title, creator's contact info, content, end. The platonic ideal of a single-purpose website. It's beautiful.
The backend isn't quite so clean. It has a bunch of superfluous Wordpress template cruft, even some trackers my ad blocker had to catch. Still, I like it overall.
- TaurenHunter 2 years agoAre these sandwiches AI generated?
- dylan604 2 years agothissandwhichdoesnotexist
- braingenious 2 years agoNo.
- gptgpp 2 years agoOh... then was chatGPT used to come up with the idea?
I just don't understand why it would be on the front page without AI??
- braingenious 2 years agoNope. A twitter user films her sandwiches rotating and posts them. That’s it, that’s the whole website.

I really wish online stores utilized this to convey dimensions and material texture better.

- benwikler 2 years agoIn case you think NeRFs don't have any useful applications
- dylan604 2 years agoI like how some are cleanly cut in half, while some have been half eaten. Just to keep it from feeling like it's repetitive.
- naillo 2 years agoAre these done with NeRFs? Feels like they are but could just be lots of photos around the objects. Curious if anyone knows.
- medler 2 years agoNot sure but I think they’re just videos of the sandwiches rotating. Here’s a pic of the lightbox with the rotating platform: https://nitter.net/NotABigJerk/status/1628493044113711105

- medler 2 years agoLauren, as a long-time follower I was excited to see this hit the front page of Hacker News. Since you’re here could you share some technical details about how this works? What kind of hardware/software stack are you using? Are you using NeRFs(?)?
- NotABigJerk 2 years agoThanks for asking! I record everything on my iPhone in a lightbox on a rotating jewelry display, then pass the video through Premiere Pro for grading and framing, AfterEffects to rotoscope out the background, and then Photoshop to legacy export as a GIF.

- SeanAnderson 2 years ago...but there's a rotating hotdog. That's not a sandwich.
- cyrialize 2 years agoI agree. People always talk about technicalities, ingredients, structure, etc. in this argument.
For me, the main reason why a hotdog isn't a sandwich is that you can't use the two interchangeably. I would never go up to a hotdog stand and ask for a sandwich.
