      Most politicians want to be seen subsidizing virtuous-sounding stuff. And once the ball gets rolling, most beneficiaries of government subsidies are happy to help their benefactors win reelection...

        Cuz the US economy is 80% consumption and 20% production, compared to say the Chinese economy where its more like 50-50.

        So its complex to rebuild manufacturing after outsourcing it all away, and concocting stories for decades about how "advanced and developed" economies don't build factories, they just design stuff and provide services.
