- riffic 3 months agopre-acquisition there were frequent Twitter outages. I remember one particular lengthy outage during my brief tenure as a moderator in the Twitter subreddit. I'll state the obvious but it's not entirely unexpected for complex systems to encounter failures.
example from 2021:

- ceejayoz 3 months agoYes, it's certainly not unheard of; early Twitter featured the "failwhale" pretty regularly.
- riffic 3 months agoI'm not talking about Early Twitter though. I specifically bring up an outage in an era with competent organizational ops or SRE capacity.
2021 was well beyond the growing pains in the "failwhale" period.
- Hamuko 3 months agoThere was a massive time period between the failwhale era and the acquisition. Like 15 years or a bit under?

- paulddraper 3 months agoIt had a pretty massive outage on Feb 26 FWIW. And Feb 19.
I don't recall seeing it on HN though.

- fred_is_fred 3 months agoIf Musk says it's DDOS then it's almost certainly not DDOS.
- ElijahLynn 3 months agoI wouldn't have believed this a few years ago but I do now. If you sell your soul to the biggest liar on Earth, then you are complicit and probably have similar neurological patterns.

- SketchySeaBeast 3 months ago"Tracing" a DDoS?
- paulddraper 3 months agoI wouldn't call it tracing, but the usual mitigation is block IPs.
Depending on the nature of the DDoS, you may block it at other parts of the stack.
