Is This AI Wave Really That Disruptive? Where Do You Stand? Over the past year, the narrative around AI in software development has shifted dramatically. Not long ago, the headlines were filled with optimism-AI copilots, productivity boosts, and promises of a new golden age for developers. Lately, though, the stories seem to focus more on disruption, job risk, and unintended consequences.

As a developer, do you feel this AI wave is truly as disruptive as it’s being portrayed? Or is the current climate just another hype cycle, amplified by media swings from “game-changer” to “doom and gloom”?

Have you personally felt your work or job prospects change because of AI in the last year?

Do you see AI as a net positive, a threat, or something more nuanced?

Are you more optimistic or anxious about the future of our profession compared to six months ago?

I think it's still far too soon to know what the impact will be. My bet is that it won't be as bad as many think, and it won't be as good as many think.

I don't think about its impact on our profession much at all, to be honest. I am, however, much more worried about the impact on the future of our society compared to six months ago. Perhaps that's why I cling so hard to the "it's too soon to tell" reaction.

I haven't seen any disruption personally, but I have little doubt that AI will be tremendously, possibly catastrophically disruptive.

Btw, I don't even get what it's meant with "this AI wave". This is still the same wave that started less than three years ago (ChatGPT). Copilot is little older than two years! This is just one, huge, gigantic tsunami, and we've seen only the very beginning of it.

At least at the moment, I think it's primarily a threat, because people ask it do do more than it can, and don't view the results cynically enough. Come maintenance time, the price will be very painful.
